Become much more than a backpacker

There are basically two ways to experience Thailand; the first being the more conventional approach as a backpacker. This, of course, is a great option for anyone interesting in seeing a beautiful and unique country. The second option, and the one I highly encourage, allows you to become immersed in Thai culture and experience Thailand to its fullest. This option is to join an organization like Travel to Teach and become much more than a backpacker. With Travel to Teach, you're truly part of the Thai culture, part of the community you're living in and you will, without a doubt, get more out of your time here than you ever could by simply traveling around. It's a wonderful balance of traveling, helping others, and simply having a great time. I actually find myself looking at other travelers I see around town with a feeling akin to pity as I know their experience here won't be nearly as rich as those who chose to experience Nongkhai as a volunteer.

The best advice I can lend to anyone thinking about joining this program can be summed up in two words: be flexible. You can read story after story about how great Thailand is and how wonderful Travel to Teach is, but in the end, everyone is unique and everyone's personal definition of "wonderful" varies. When I first arrived to Nong Khai, I have to admit, almost nothing was what I expected. Without going into great detail, I'll just say an earlier flight home crossed my mind several times. But, something inside me kept telling me to stay (could it have been the painfully long plane ride I just took that I'd have to repeat???). I'm so very thankful that I listened to that voice and stayed. I'm confident saying that coming here has been one of the best, if not the best, decisions I've ever made.

Nong Khai is a wonderfully dynamic city with more to offer than you may anticipate. While there is definitely a noticeable farang population, you'll find that the city remains true to Thai culture and offers a huge array of activities. From an intensive yoga course to a night "out on the town", I genuinely think its safe to say to anyone that they can find something to fit their interests here.

Whether you're planning to travel because you'd like some time off before you start your studies or because you just need to take a break from your "real life" (like me!), I'm certain you'll be pleased you chose to take the "road less traveled" and spent your time in Thailand as a Travel to Teach volunteer. I'll leave you with a quick packing tip: be sure to bring some mosquito repellant and a sweater or two (yes, it can actually get cold in Thailand). If you find that your backpack is getting a bit full, consider making some room by leaving your expectations at home- they'll probably be met and exceeded anyway!
