T2T on TV

The esarn (Isan) discovery channel had heard about T2T and the work we do in different areas of Isan and Thailand. They wanted an interview and to find out more in detail about our programs. So Mooy was interviewed live on one of their half-hour programs. The hostesses were very curious, interested and extremely sympathetic to our cause.

Thank you Patricia

The project at Michai school has some kind of magic over it.
The children are so sweet, the teachers are so nice and the school is so poor that it inspires everyone.
We keep receiving donations for the school and for our restoration there.
Patricia (above when taking her class to the ice-cream store) has donated several times.

"Michai Camp report"

So far during our renovation of the Michai school we have:
* Painted the school
* Fixed the toilets and installed a water purifier
* Repaired furniture
* Fixed fans and lights
* Cleared and painted the children's playground

As a result of T2T's Renovation Camp the school, which had been previously threatened with closure, now has a new lease of life. It now overflows with children from the neighborhood who previously went to over crowded town schools.

Now that Travel to Teach volunteers regularly teach at the school we will be able to continue organising work camps (English teaching and Sport coaching) whilst restoring the school until it is completely repaired.

Travel to Teach Laos - another new program

computer centre Our new program in Laos is now officially open.
We will be teaching in the outskirts of Vientiane, probably one of the smallest capital cities in Asia.

We are working with Mr Kamphat, and his organisation TADCDO (Training and Conservation for Development Organisation). We will be teaching in schools as well as being involved with state based broadcasting and media projects.

Our Program in Laos completes our South-East Asia expansion and provides a perfect volunteering loop around the region, making it very suitable for combination stays.

Travel to Teach at the seaside

computer centre MORE NEW PROGRAMS!!!
By coincidence, our two latest programs both are located by the sea.

One on the island of Koh Chang in the Gulf of Thailand, close to the Cambodian border, and Nha Trang Vietnam on the South China Sea.

Both programs are at seaside resorts and are therefore suited for anyone who want to combine volunteering with diving or swimming or sunbathing.

In Koh Chang we will work to promote eco-tourism. The island is becoming more and more popular in the west and both nature and culture is at risk unless tourism is balanced.

In Nha Trang we will work with Crazy Kim, teaching street kids. Kim Le a Vietnamese Canadian systems engineer, came back to Nha Trang to teach at the university. She reacted on the situations of the children that sleep on the beach started a campaign on their behalf and now has a bar to support her work protecting these kids from abuse and sexual exploitation. She now "hijacks" backpackers to help teaching the children in the mornings.

We will help by providing volunteers to make the teaching more coherent and relevant and we are also hoping to start a tourism training school where children can learn the skills desired by the large beach resorts occupying the area.

Kim has recently been given an old house by the government to use as a school for the kids. She plans on renovating it before Christmas. Once it is ready the children will be able to study, to eat and to rest after lunch.

If you are interested in teaching Tourism or English in Nha Trang or if you would like to contribute to the renovation please contact Charlotte.

New Volunteer Stories and Photo Galleries

flower We have recently received a bunch of volunteer stories from our locations in South-East Asia.

Read about Caroline's trip to Thailand and Vietnam, Mary Croy's Dairy or Maria's trip to Cambodia. We also have a volunteer story from Lawrence Woo who stayed with us in Nong Khai as part of his trip of Asia.

This month we have also launched photo galleries of Around Vietnam, Hanoi, Nha Trang and Pai in Northern Thailand.

Mid autumn festival in Vietnam

flower

The fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month is the time for the Mid Autumn festival or Tet Trung Thu in Vietnam. Originally the festival was full of prayers and ceremonies urging the sun not to forget to rise again the next year. Today it is a time for children to celebrate.
Many children take to the streets and perform the dragon dance, an important aspect of many festivals including the Mid-Autumn. The dragon dance is a re-enactment of the earth and sky duality, the yin and yang of the world. The Lord Earth, called Ong Dia in Vietnamese, is the dancer who dances around the dragon, urging it on. Ong Dia has a very round, happy smiling moon-face. He represents the wealth or fullness of the earth.
The streets are packed with vendors selling special cakes called banh trung thu that are eaten at the festival time. Unlike western cakes they are filled with lotus seeds, orange peel, ground beans, and sometimes egg and pork fat for flavor. It is traditional that one offers a box of these special cakes to someone that you want to please or owe a favor.
